Rose Abraham Darby - what kind of variety is it?

The variety was obtained in 1965 by crossing two varieties:

  • polyanthus yellow rose Yellow Cushion;
  • Aloha wicker pink-red rose.

Rose Abraham Darby

The resulting result went on sale immediately under several names besides Abraham Derby: AUScot, Candy Rain, Country Darby.

Short description, characteristic

A terry flower of 70 petals has a cup-shaped form, classic for old park roses. Petals are painted in a copper-apricot hue in the central part of the corolla, and pink closer to the edges. A powerful bush with a height of 1.2 to 3.05 m can be trimmed to be compact and round, up to 1.5 m across. And you can give it the appearance of a climbing rose. But in any case, the rose bush will be strewn with flowers.

The foliage is plentiful, green, shiny. Flowering occurs in alternating long waves.

Blooming flowers droop under their own weight

Corolla roses are changeable in color. In the heat, their shade becomes apricot, and in the cool goes into saturated pink. Shedding is reluctant. Among the English roses, Abraham Derby is considered the largest, its buds in full dissolution reach 15 cm across.

Forcing occurs at the ends of annual shoots with tassels of 1-3 flowers. The strongest aroma has typical pink, strawberry and fruit notes.

Note! Prickly in this variety is medium. Therefore, when caring for a rose bush, it is advisable to wear gloves made of dense matter.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

The advantages of Abraham Derby are:

  • Spectacular view of flowering bushes.
  • Continuous continuous flowering.
  • Unusual size of flowers.
  • Strong persistent aroma.

Among the shortcomings, it is worth noting the average resistance to diseases, low frost resistance, the ability to burn out in the heat, as well as the deterioration of flowering during flooding, in drought and in the shade.

Use in landscape design

Variety Abraham Derby is often referred to as a scrub, since the bushes are vigorous. But in fact, the rose is often planted at the supports to let her whip along the trellis.

With this solution, you can much more beneficial to show the beauty of flowers, often drooping under their own weight. When creating mixborders, bushes are planted in the background.

Growing a flower, how to plant in open ground

Rosa Hot chocolate (Hot chocolate) - a description of the varietal flower

Get an excellent result - a strong, abundantly flowering rose bush will allow the implementation of the basic rules for planting English park roses.

In what form is landing

It is possible to purchase varietal seedlings exclusively in a specialized nursery, where deliveries are made from European garden centers. The optimal age of planting material is 2-3 years. Such a bush is able to winter well and adapt quickly to a new place.

Open root sapling

Saplings with an open or closed root system go on sale. When buying, pay attention to the state of shoots and roots. The roots should not be overdried, and on the shoots there should not be suspicious spots and traces of rot. The living root does not crunch or break when bent. Some of the shoots may be lignified, but the rest are covered with green bark.

Note! Wanting not to limit yourself to the exact timing of planting, you should purchase a seedling with a closed root system in the container.

What time is the landing

Landing is allowed in spring and autumn.

  • Spring (in April) is more profitable, since the bush has more time for rooting and building up the ground part.
  • Autumn (in September) planting gives an advantage in growing roots, which increases the chances of the first flowering next summer.

Location selection

Rosa Abraham Derby does not tolerate the shadow, so a place for her is chosen only in sunny areas. It is advisable that in the afternoon hours light shading is created.

The plant will show its beauty in the absence of strong winds and protection from heavy rain. It is good when there is a tall tree with a lace crown nearby. If you choose a strongly purged place for planting, then the bush can even drop leaves and buds in bad weather.

How to prepare the soil and flower for planting

Heavy, waterlogged soils are not suitable for landing. The best solution is to dig a large landing hole larger than the root system and fill it with a layer of drainage and loose soil mixed with humus and sand.

The roots of seedlings with an open root system are shortened, getting rid of damaged and dried areas. The shoots need to be shortened, leaving no more than 6 live buds on each of them.

Landing procedure step by step

Planting seedlings is performed in the following sequence:

  1. At a depth of one and a half bayonet shovels digging pits. The distance between the individual bushes is 1.5 m or more.
  2. A layer of 5-8 cm thick drainage from broken brick, fine expanded clay or clean sand is poured at the bottom.
  3. A nutrient substrate is prepared by mixing the soil with a neutral acid-base reaction (pH = 5.5) with the same amount of peat, adding sand, vermiculite, and at least 3-4 kg of compost for loosening.
  4. The seedling is lowered into the pit, deepening the root neck by 5-7 cm.
  5. Fill the roots with a prepared substrate.
  6. Watered.
  7. Mulch the soil around with sawdust, pine bark, coniferous litter, peat.

Note! Saplings with an open root system are soaked the day before planting in a solution of a rooting agent or fungicide for saturation with moisture and disinfection.

Seedlings with an open root system must first be soaked

Rose bush care

The agricultural technology for growing park roses is generally standard. To get beautiful flowers, you should protect them from diseases and pests, feed them and water them on time.

Watering rules and humidity

Rosa Coco Loko (Koko Loko) - a description of the varietal flower

The desired frequency of watering is every week. If it rains often enough, then you can not water it at all.

The optimal water flow rate is 10-12 liters per bush. In the fall, regardless of the weather, watering is stopped. Young shoots should not grow with the advent of September.

Top dressing and soil quality

In the first year after planting, you can do without fertilizing. The prepared substrate has everything you need for active growth.

In subsequent years, the entire feeding season is carried out with an interval of 2 weeks. Specialized complex fertilizers are suitable, for example, "Agricola for roses", superphosphate, as well as organic compounds - humate, mullein. The soil should be well loosened, without weeds.

Pruning and transplanting

When shelter is removed from roses in spring, sanitary pruning is necessary. To obtain a compact bush, the shoots are shortened by two-thirds. To form a tall and sprawling bush, only diseased and damaged branches are pruned, while healthy ones are raised and tied to a trellis.

Since the depth of the root system can reach 2 m or more, adult roses are not recommended to be transplanted. Do this only in a hopeless situation. The plant will hurt after this for at least 2-3 years, the risk of death is great.

Features of wintering a flower

When performing cover events, the Derby rose has winter hardiness of -29 ° C (zone IV). With the advent of frost, bushes spud, cutting out the extra (unripe, twisted, diseased) shoots. For hilling, mix dry soil with sand.

Attention! Peat and straw for winter hilling are not suitable, as they are saturated with moisture and can provoke the appearance of fungal diseases.

The bushy bushes are bent to the ground (untied from the supports), covered with agrotextile or lapnik, so that in winter the snow accumulated from above with a snowdrift. Low young roses can be covered with ordinary cardboard boxes, crushing them with a weighting agent from blowing away by the wind. Shelters are removed after complete thawing of the soil.

Flowering roses

With proper agricultural technology, the Abraham Derby rose will delight its magnificent flowers for more than a decade in a row throughout the summer months. At the height of flowering from a distance of several meters, the aroma of blooming buds is perfectly audible.

  • Period of activity and rest

The first flowers open in the first decade of June. The last of them can be cut in the last decade of September.

  • Care during and after flowering

So that flowering does not stop, it is important not to skip feeding, and wilted buds must be cut off, preventing the plant from wasting energy on ripening seeds.

  • What to do if it does not bloom, possible causes

This effect happens when planting roses in the shade. If the bush has changed the color of the foliage to tan, then this indicates an acute shortage of iron and magnesium, urgent feeding is required.

Flower propagation

Variety Derby propagated by layering and cuttings. The choice is made in favor of the most convenient way.

When is the propagation of the rose bush? The optimal time for harvesting cuttings is June, and shoots without buds at the ends, 10-12 cm long, are taken. Layers are bent to the soil in early spring, but they can be planted from the mother bush only a year later.

Detailed description:

  • On the cuttings, the lower leaves are cut, and the upper ones are half-cut.
  • The lower tip of the handle is dipped into Kornevin, and then dug in loose soil. Be sure to cover with a transparent cap on top to protect against drying out.
  • In fact, they take care of the cuttings for a year, like young seedlings, only replanting the established ones next year in a permanent place.

Under the cuttings near the bush, dig holes 10 cm deep, where the branches are bent and covered with earth. Next, they need to be watered regularly for a whole year. If successful, each layering will give an independent bush.

Diseases, pests and ways to combat them

Roses are sprayed with specialized fungicides in spring and summer against black spotting, rust and powdery mildew. Against pests (aphids, spider mites, thrips, leafworms, etc.), insecticides and acaricides are used (Commander, Aktara, Spark, etc.).

In the modest and large gallery of roses, the Abraham Derby variety will always stand out. Its beauty is one of the standards that modern breeders strive to approach. Demand for these seedlings is not declining. However, domestic gardeners need to buy such roses only in specialized nurseries, otherwise you can get a completely different plant.
