Avocado is an exotic plant, it's hard to believe, but growing it at home is quite simple.

In order for it to decorate the interior and even bear fruit, it is necessary to plant it correctly, and then take care of this tropical beauty.

Features of domesticated avocado

When kept in the house, the plant has a number of features:

  • Under natural conditions, grows 20 m, at home - up to 3 m.
  • Fruits appear rarely, as a rule, the plant is used as a decorative one.
  • When fruiting occurs, it can occur for 3-6 years, edible fruits are obtained, but to taste somewhat inferior to purchased ones.
  • Has the ability to purify air.

Avocado planting dates, selection and preparation of planting material

It is better to grow a tree from a seed in spring, during a period of active growth. The fruit is fully ripe, without damage.

Characteristics of ripe fruit:

  • dark skin;
  • maximum density and elasticity of the pulp, when compressing and releasing the fetus, it takes its previous shape;
  • ease of separation of the bone the size of a quail egg.

The method of stimulation of ripening

With a not quite ripe fruit, it is stacked with a banana, apple or tomato. These are products that have ethylene - a gas that helps accelerate ripening. At a temperature of + 18 ... +23 ° C in 2 days the avocado ripens.

Then the fruit is cut in the middle and, rotating, remove the bone. It is carefully washed under the tap.

Planting methods, pot, soil

There are two methods for germinating avocados:

  • closed;
  • open.

Closed way

This process consists in directly planting the seeds in the pot.

In stages, it happens like this:

  • Prepare a container, for this place a drainage of 1.5-2 cm on the bottom (small expanded clay, pebbles).
  • Prepare a nutrient mixture for planting - take equal proportions of sand, humus, garden soil, you can add peat and a little ash. The soil should be loose and well-drained. Pour it over the drainage by filling the tank to a height 1-1.5 cm from the top edge.
  • Place the blunt end of the bone into the ground about 3 cm, leaving a sharp sticking out above the surface. Water abundantly.
  • Place the pot on a bright windowsill in a warm room. Water periodically, avoiding drying out of the soil and waterlogging.
  • About a month later, a sprout should appear.

Open way

With this method, at the initial stage, planting material is germinated in a glass of water.

It consists of the following actions:

  • Prepare a container with cool water, hydrogel.
  • Make three circles (120 ° angle) in a circle in the middle of the bone, four holes (90 ° angle) can be inserted into which sticks (toothpick, match, etc.) can be inserted.
  • Leaning a bone on them, place it with a blunt end in a glass, immersing 1/3.
  • Constantly monitor the water level, add as it decreases.
  • After the appearance of the root (0.5-2.5 months), transplant into the soil prepared in the same way as with the closed method.

Another method relates to the open method:

  • Put planting material in wet cotton wool, constantly moisturizing it.
  • When dividing it into two parts, plant it in a pot.
  • The sprout will appear in 1-2 weeks.

Avocado Care

To grow an avocado at home, you must observe several conditions:

  • Plant so that the point of the bone is constantly above the soil level.
  • Observe the living conditions of plants, close to natural tropical.
ParameterSpring SummerAutumn winter
LocationSouth, east, west window.
LightingBright but diffused for 15 hours. With the help of additional highlighting for half a day.
Temperature+ 16 ... +20 ° C.+ 10 ... +12 ° C.
WateringWhen the soil dries, about once a week. With complete drying of the soil for 2-3 days.
HumidityKeep up. Place nearby plants with large leaves. Put moistened sand or expanded clay in a pallet. Spray 4-5 times a day under hot conditions (heating or summer).
Top dressing2-3 times a month.once a month.
Fertilizer for decorative flowering.

Transplant avocado

The transplant procedure must be carried out in a timely manner, preferably in the spring:

  • The first is a sprout of 15 cm.
  • The second and subsequent - every year.

The composition of the soil as when planting. The pot is approximately 5 cm larger each time.

Pruning

The formation of the tree is carried out in early spring:

  • The first is the upper level of 7-8 sheets, side - 5-6.
  • The second and subsequent - to maintain the same height to form a large crown.

It is good to plant three plants and twist their trunks as they grow, resulting in an original tree with a lush crown.

Diseases, pests and other problems

Avocados, like any plant, are exposed to disease and pest attacks. Often this is due to improper care.

ManifestationCauseElimination
Drying, falling leaves.Low or high temperature. Inadequate or excessive watering. Dry indoor air.Track the plant by changing conditions. Having found out the reason, eliminate the error.
Blanching foliageSpider mite, scabies, powdery mildew.Remove affected areas. To process with a solution of laundry soap. In extreme cases, use insecticides (Actara, Actellic).
